Mmmmmmmmmm We came back tonight. Brownie delight - fudgy, creamy, and chock-full of brownies. If you like Edy's version you will loooooove this. Strawberry cheesecake - very yummy. Fully of berries and fresh tasting Corn- had a bit more cinnamon flavor than last time but still unique and inviting Pistachio - not sure I liked this one but my dining partners loved it Toasted coconut -definitely a winner with shavings of fresh coconut Blackberry - tart and creamy....delicious.

A wonderful find. Was visiting Winterthur in Delaware with my wife on her birthday. She decided she would like ice cream and I jumped on the smart phone to find that La Michoacana was about 10 miles away. A lovely drive through the country brought us to Kennet Square and some delightful ice cream. Ann had caramel swirl ice cream with hot fudge. I did the butter pecan as a caramel sundae. The portions are very good, prices quite reasonable The quality is excellent. Tasted the coconut chocolate chip (Ann thought the coconut flavor a bit on the artificial side; I thought it would make a great hot fudge sundae next visit. We also tried the corn and thought of the tamal de elote that we love with Central American cuisine. Might try the corn on a future visit with caramel sauce and the recommended cinnamon. Hoping to find our way back on future travels from our DC suburb home.

I came to La Michoacana with no prior knowledge of the place, ordered two scoops (one corn, one avocado), sprinkled the complimentary chili powder on top, and minutes later, powerless to my own opinion, heard myself exclaim out loud, "This is some of the best ice cream I've ever had." Do not take those words lightly, my friends. I've had enough ice cream in my day to know that this knee-jerk reaction to a veggie-flavored dairy treat is no laughing matter. But I know what you are thinking. Corn ice cream? Really?! Prior to giving it a taste at La Michoacana, I'd heard of corn ice cream being served at trendy spots in New York City, but something tells me this pocket-sized parlor in lil' ole Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, the self-proclaimed Mushroom Capital of the World, a store founded by immigrant Mexicans who came to the area to work on the farms and developed a nostalgic sweet tooth for a taste of the homeland, seems just a bit more legit than whatever hipster endeavor The City's got goin' on in the Lower East Side, Williamsburg, wherever. Not that I'd shy away from such endeavors, but La Michoacana just came off as sincere, honest, straightforward. The sprinkle of chili powder turned my corn ice cream into farm-fresh-flavored elote (and Lord knows, I love elote). My other scoop of creamy avocado was equally, impressively delicious. To my surprise, the flavors were by no means bizarre once they hit my tongue. Instead, they tasted like the most natural things in the world, as if corn and avocado ice cream were chocolate and vanilla (but better, duh). Their consistency was thick, dense, substantial and at a size "small", only cost me a whopping $2.50. With a boatload of intriguing flavors (including Rice Pudding, Mamey, Tamarind, Eggnog, and something simply called Blue, to name a few), La Michoacana is the exact type of homemade, hometown joint that gets featured on all those Food Network and Travel Channel shows, if it isn't part of some foodie countdown already. I'm tellin' you, this was some unreal ice cream. When I let my mother in on this place over the phone (Mama's Boy alert), she replied that corn and avocado ice cream sounded disgusting (!), to which I said: A) Far from it. In fact, it's probably my new favorite thing. B) You always struggled to get me to finish my veggies. Can't we at least call this one a compromise?

Just the best ice cream period. I cant say enough how consistent and delicious the flavors are. My favorites are the pistachio and sweet corn. The servings look large but after staring down at an empty cup I had to go back for more. If my tongue could jump and scream it was doing that the whole time. Too good to pass up.

This place has a lot going for it... starting with the fact that they serve ice cream. That's a strong way to garner my buy-in. I was in the neighborhood during the mushroom festival, and my mom told me that one of her students family (she's a teacher at KCSD) owned the place, and it was supposed to be good. We walked past fried mushrooms and mushroom risotto, and went for some s'cream! Flavors like corn, avocado etc. seemed right at home in the Kennett area. We figured if we were getting ice cream here, we had to do it right! My mom got a scoop of corn, and a scoop of avocado. I went for a scoop of rice pudding and a scoop of coconut chocolate chip. In short, my mom is a machine, and i'm kind of a wimp. They have chili powder or cinnamon that you can sprinkle on top. After introducing herself to the woman behind the register, the moms bonded and we got lots of good recomendations (cinnamon... hold the chili... but its a personal thing...). We went out front and sat on a bench and people watched while eating one of the most spectacular cups of ice cream i've ever experienced. I was really pleased to learn that the rice pudding was just a flavor, and not a texture. Everything was so smooth and creamy and tasty. I had a few tastes of my moms, and the corn and avocado were both sweet too, but they have a tasted that was very true to the flavor suggestion. All in all, all 4 flavors were equally delicious. No weak links, or 'do not repeats'. I can't wait to go visit my parents again. They live in Kennett, and I'm anxious to get this again. EveryoneI also really want to take my dad. He has the sweet tooth, and I feel like he'd love this! It'd be hard not to!

Delicious homemade ice creams, water ices, and Popsicles in many flavors in this little family-run tienda. Of course there are the usual flavors like vanilla but go out on a limb and try more unusual flavors like mamey and corn. We tried the roasted coconut (with cinnamon sprinkled on top) and the strawberry banana ice creams. Both were delicious and light tasting in that they were not heavy or lardy like other local homemade places. The employees are friendly and they have a few benches outside where you can enjoy your frozen treat.

What a crazy little ice cream store. Make their own ice cream and water ice in wacky flavors. We tried like 20 flavors before landing on a scoop of Corn and a scoop of Avocado, with a little powdered chili powder on each. It sounds strange, but you have to try it!! Wish I lived closer!

This is the best ice cream I have ever eaten. The lime Popsicles are to die for.

Stopped in here while in the area. The cinnamon ice cream was fantastic. Not too sweet, and just enough cinnamon flavor. The husband had a sugar free coconut bar which he absolutely loved. Service was great.

I went here once on the suggestion of a friend who mentioned "corn ice cream with cinnamon" and I needed to find out what the heck she was talking about. YUMMY! They also have avocado ice cream and your more typical vanilla/chocolate/cookies and cream. It's run by Mexicans (as is typical for the Kennett area - they run everything) so I'm hoping that it is actually authentic so I don't look like too much of an idiot if I ever go down to Mexico and ask for corn ice cream.

In town visiting my folks for a few weeks and they suggested we go get some ice cream. My dad was going on and on about this "corn" ice cream that they serve.....I was confused. Apparently it is owned by Mexicans and they make their own. Well, it did not disappoint. I decided to go the traditional route and get cookies and cream and it was delicious. My dad got his fave peanut butter, and mom got lemon water ice. I tried the water ice, an east coast thing and it was amazing. So, I passed off my ice cream to pops who had already finished his peanut butter ice cream and went back inside for the water ice. I got strawberry/lemon. YUM!

I visited here this past Saturday (the day before they were closing for the season), and have to say everything was delicious. The corn ice cream was my favorite, though I think it has just a touch too much cinnamon. The coconut is to die for, and I loved the mamey (tropical fruit), too. I'll definitely go back in the spring.

  • Chip Z.

The power of Yelp. We went here totally based on the Yelp reviews and we all loved it, adults and children both. I recommend the corn and cinnamon (seriously) or the Mamet (some red fruity flavor). Among us we tried 5 other flavors and liked them all. Even the vanilla was above average. Just to be clear: it has the full range of "regular" flavors so don't let the off-beat flavors or Mexican angle scare you. Good prices, friendly service from people who appear to be owners--what's not to love? We went twice in 22 hours and are already talking about what flavors we'll get next time. If in the area, give it a go. (Only warning: it's on a street where some cars go fast so keep an eye on the little ones.) JAN 2012 UPDATE: Almost just reviewed this place again. STILL love it. Go there!! Well, wait until spring because it is closed for winter. BUT they just opened up a taco/burrito place 2 blocks away and you can get their wrapped popsicles there. (The tacos were very good at the new joint.) Perfect after a visit to Longwood Gardens.

Hands down, the best ice cream in Chester County. If you ever find yourself in Kennett Square in the summer this place is well worth the stop. The Corn or Avocado flavors are amazing.

  • Lauren H.

Flavorful, creamy, dense ice cream. Very friendly and helpful staff. I consider myself a frozen dessert snob, and this place gets 5 stars from me! The corn ice cream (with cinnamon sprinkled on top) is a must-try. Nutella was wonderful and had little bits of hazelnuts throughout which I loved. Mamey is also really good - kind of a delicate tropical/peach flavor. Avocado is also recommended!

  • Sharon U.

This was well-worth the detour on my way back to Philly from Longwood Gardens. Delicious homemade ice cream. I got the toasted coconut with chocolate chips, because I am a sucker for coconut chocolate chip ice cream. It was creamy, coconut-y (sometimes people fail at this part in coconut ice cream, shocking, I know), and extremely refreshing. The man had mint cookies and cream. We both agreed that next time we will do something more experimental. Literally everything looks great, and I wish I lived closer so I could try some more things! If you're in the area, this place is well-worth your time.

Really cute place that I happened upon while wondering around Kennett after dinner. It seemed pretty busy so we figured we better check it out. The nutella ice cream was awesome. I tried the corn, but I didn't love it. The cake ice cream was also good.

  • Michael F.

Simply a unique and one of a kind ice cream experience for us who grew up in the U.S. not having anything else but ice cream from a half gallon box and an occasionally soft serve. This place is the real deal. The water ice flavors themselves are enough to make Rita spin her head around. My favorite so far, the lime. Hard to top that on a hot day. Next up for me is some of the traditional ice cream as some other reviewers have posted.

Wow. Corn ice cream and toasted coconut ice cream with chili pepper.

  • Monty W.

Three words: Corn ice cream. La Michoacana is the best homemade ice cream that I've ever had, and it's consistently excellent. When we go in for a frozen treat, we always get the waffle cone in the medium size (medium is still quite large!). We usually try flavors that we haven't sampled yet, and top it all with corn ice cream. To add the crown atop the corn goodness, one MUST add a very generous amount of chili powder all over the exposed helado (ice cream). Think of chili roasted corn in a frozen form. It's amazing. Next time you're at Longwood Gardens, or walking around the streets of Kennett, be sure to sample the wares of La Michoacana. !Viva Elote!

There are some things that are absolute in life: tourists will always stand to the left on metro escalators, it will rain when you are tailgating on a racetrack in a sundress, and avocados make everything taste better. La Michoacana totally gets item number three. Why hadn't avocado ice cream been on my radar before now? I'll admit I was a little skeptical as I dug my spoon into the solid, light green-speckled-with-darker green scoop I was handed by a lady who glared at me when I didn't order instantly (I was too busy eyeing the extensive flavor list -- corn -- really?!), but one taste and I was hooked. Oh, La Mich (can I call you that?), your inventive dairy products call to me over state lines. I will return to sample your popsicles and feast on your water ice.

My friends took me here on the way back from our trip to D.C. to Baltimore. They were raving about this place and how delicious and unique the ice cream was. When we parked and explored the little town of Kennett Square I wasn't expecting much from this little ice cream shop. The ice cream is amazing. I got their most popular combination, which was the avocado and corn ice cream. It was creamy, dense and packed with flavor. You can really taste the corn and avocado in the ice cream. My friend actually had a chunk of avocado in the ice cream. The ice cream lady (probably the owner) told me I should put the chilli on the ice cream. I was a little hesitant because I didn't think a spicy flavor would work well on ice cream. I was pleasantly surprised. The flavors worked so well with the sweetness of the ice cream. It was a mind blowing experience. I loved every bite of it. You can also put cinnamon on the ice cream, but I opted not to do that. I was too much into the spicy, cold, and sweet flavor combination that I had recently discovered. It was so addicting. I wanted to get another 2 scoops. There's a good variety of flavors, but be wise with your samples because you only get two per customer. There was guava, and all sorts of fruit and veggie flavors. I wanted to try them all. The staff was friendly and very informative and the prices are great. I paid about $12 for 4 people, two scoops per person. If anybody knows of a place in the Bay Area that serves corn and avocado ice cream with chilli powder, PLEASE let me know. I am itching to get my fix.

There's really not a lot needed for this review. The ice cream and water ice are fantastic. I've yet to find a flavor that wasn't stellar. Two things cost a half star: fee for a credit card and minimal seating outside. You can't go wrong here. Try something familiar or grab something exotic you will certainly be happy.

This is the best ice cream I've had in ages. I can't imagine anything better than the combo that I created: a scoop of Corn and a scoop of Chocolate in a waffle cone with chili powder and cinnamon on top. Corn. Ice Cream. Who'd have thought that it would be that good!? Also check out the Avocado Ice Cream...it was delicious and buttery. Oh...and the Coconut was amazing too! Basically, it's all good. Find something that rocks you and you'll be in heaven. But I strongly recommend Corn.

A great ice cream place! Turns out Mexican flavors and Mexican influenced flavors are awesome in ice cream form. I had a scoop each of corn and strawberry on a cone, and it was truly delightful.

Corn and avocado ice cream??? Say what?! For my first visit to La Michoacana, I went for a standard that was tried and true elsewhere (vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls). Their rendition was delicious, but I wish I had been a bit more adventurous. I sampled four flavors, even though they impose a sample limit of two, because my mom chose the corn and avocado ice creams. They were amazeballs apart yet the perfect coupling together. And somehow, the avocado didn't remind me of guacamole. Good on it. The glob of lime ice cream on my teeny sample spoon evoked similar sentiments. You'd think an acidic fruit flavor would best be served in sherbet or sorbet format, but that's not necessarily the case. The lime totally worked as an ice cream and the flavor really popped! La Michoacana's offerings are rich, creamy, and a little bit icy, and taste wonderfully natural and homemade. All of their flavors capture the very essence of what they are. Such a perfect treat my scoops were on a blisteringly hot, humid day, while the rest of me, vampiric skin and all, broiled in the sun. I was virtually oblivious with ice cream in hand. My caramel swirl was as perfectly vanilla as any could be (in the best way possible) with generous ribbons of buttery caramel throughout. The staff were all lovely people and happy to provide recommendations. Combined with their stellar ice cream and cheap prices, the entire experience was a win. I'll be back. I'm going for the corn, avocado, lime, and chile powder next time, because being adventurous definitely pays off here.

Had guava on the bottom, corn on the top with a light dusting of chili powder. Best ice cream in the area. Next would be Lapp's in New Holland. This place is a must try. Crazy flavors and they will blow your mind.

I've been living my life of the firm belief that vegetables and dessert have no business sharing a plate (get out of my face, carrot cake), but last night I was proven so, so wrong. Corn ice cream opened my eyes to a whole new world. It's surprisingly sweet but definitely not overpowering and so delicious. The staff could not have been nicer, even after my mom accidentally put the chili powder on her salted pretzel cone instead of cinnamon. Can't wait to visit Kennet again and try more unconventional flavors (avocado, mayan, etc). All in all, a quirky, unique find that's not to be missed.

Amazing little neighborhood ice cream joint with a massive array of flavors that are ever changing. From Nutella to Corn to Pistacho and Brownie, they pretty much have whatever you are looking for here. THere was a line out the door when we came in but they move everyone along fairly quickly. Highly recommend for a stop in after dinner on State St.

  • Denesy A.

This place not only has very reasonable prices, but they make their own ice cream! They have very unique flavors that taste delicious. My boyfriend says that the Corn Ice Cream is very tasty. I usually get the Cookies and Cream flavor, which is my favorite. I highly recommend this place!

Has to be the best ice cream in the area. You can tell it's homemade without a bunch of additives in it. Favorite flavors so far: banana, Nutella, and blackberry. Corn is also good, but different.

  • Diana C.

Let me preface this by saying i LOVE ice cream. It's not terribly difficult to please me with regard to frozen treats, but I can definitely tell the difference between good ice cream and great ice cream and this is DEFINITELY great ice cream. Great flavors, great CONSISTENCY, (so creamy and even a little gooey!) great prices, and just great overall. The actual shop is very very small, causing long lines on busy summer nights, but the line moves quickly. Absolutely worth it.

I scream, you scream... Fab little place. And I do mean little. This place is packed. All the time. For good reason.. It's good! They make the ice cream in the little building in the back and store it there too. Great pricing, fast service, friendly people. Only downer is I wish they had more flavors!! Go get you some.

Yummm!!! The best homemade water ice! Mango is my favorite and it taste so natural and just like if you are eating the actual fruit. They are very nice ! By far the best homemade ice cream/ water ice in the area!!!!

We stopped by on a trip down from NYC: if you're in the area, you -must- try this place. It's incredible. I had a waffle cone with Corn and Rum Raisin and my girlfriend had a cup with Corn and Avocado (with chili powder sprinkled on top). The chili powder is highly, highly recommended, really adds a punch to the experience. You owe it to yourself to try Corn and / or Rum Raisin. The kicker: we asked about the Tamarind ice cream and the guy just said 'I haven't made it yet.' Bona fide homemade. This place most definitely warrants a visit!

I live locally and am here at least twice a month. When they get ready to close up for the winter, we stock up on ice cream and put it in our deep freezer until they re-open in the spring. If you are visiting KSQ, Michoacana's is a "must visit". The owners are fantastic! They will let you sample every flavor if you want. They make the ice cream on site with simple ingredients. Expect to eat outside on a bench. There are just a few chairs inside, and no restrooms. Some of our top favorites (in no particular order): Corn (with cinnamon) Guava and cream Strawberry and cream vanilla (amazing!) coconut (toasted and regular coconut) strawberry water ice passion fruit water ice You can get popsicles there, too. The lime ones are delicious! Also: if you are local and want a lot of their popsicles for a party, they have an ice cream cart you can borrow. We used the cart for our wedding reception and the popsicles were a big hit!

This place does ice cream, and it does it well. Flavors are unique and delicious, portions are large, (surprisingly large for some), and the staff is courteous and quick. Everyone should be so lucky to have a local ice cream shop as unique as this one.

  • Peter G.

From the outside, I didn't think this place would be anything special, but boy was I wrong. The flavors were unique and delicious. Their serving sizes were quite substantial, too. They even had mushroom ice cream bars during the annual Mushroom Festival, but I didn't think it was nearly as good as the scooped ice cream.

If you watch Futurama and ever wondered why Fry meant when he said, "What tastes like Blue??" Well, these guys have "Blue/Azul" ice cream, so you can find out. Really though, this place is nice, it's tiny, it's got some outdoor seating and the ice cream is just plain nice. Something wonderful from south of the border. The corn ice cream is a must try.

  • Glynnis O.

Their traditional Mexican flavors are just one reason to visit this place- the quality of the ice cream is phenomenal. My fiance and I stopped in during the summer, just walking by, and decided on a whim to go in. Their rice pudding ice cream? Wonderful. Corn ice cream? Amazing. I only wish I lived closer!

I went here on my day off on a Friday and this place was packed! Remembering all the reviews I have read on yelp, I went with the corn ice cream and added chili powder on it; it was AMAZING. I can't explain it, it just was that good. Not only can you get a variety of unique flavors of ice cream but the store also makes their own ice pops aka paletas in 50+ flavors AND water ice. Wow, thats a lot. As I sat outside the store eating my corn ice cream in silent pleasure, the woman at the bench next me says out loud "that is the best ice cream I have ever tasted" and not to be mean, but she was old. So you know thats some good ice cream. Oh they are also really inexpensive. A small cost $2.50 and it was 2 huge scoops. So that makes it even better ice cream.

Excellent quality and unique favors. My favorites are corn, avocado, or cinnamon. Free samples.. Portions are generous. Great find on a hot summer day, but wish it were open more often (its closed during the winter). Enjoy the best ice cream in the area and feel like a little kid again.

Hola, como estas? Muy bien, now that I have had this ice cream. I had the corn ice cream with cinnamon sprinkled on top and it was amazing. I had never heard of that flavor before--and according to the kid behind the counter is is traditional in Mexico. The service was great, and the pequena serving was plentiful and cheap at $2.50.

Go directly to La Michoacana. Spectacular ice creams and water ices. Even better is the wonderful service. These people know how to run a business. Nuff said. Well almost. The Nutella ice cream is great and not to sound like everyone else here, but the corn ice cream was fantastic. Weirdly enough, I loved the avocado ice cream too. Still cannot bring myself to try the queso (yes cheese ice cream). My new favorite is the chili mango water ice. Seriously considering a drive up there this weekend -its only 1 and a half hours away. Well worth it.

Mmmmmmmmexican ice cream. Corn! Avocado! Mamey! Guava and Cream! No, they're not salad ingredients...they're ice cream flavors that you can try at this excellent little mom-and-pop shop. And if you're just not feeling adventurous, go for good ole' Amurican Cookies and Cream (you can make your pedestrian selection more exciting by sprinkling on some cinnamon or chili powder from the shakers on the counter.) For you vegans or other non-dairy types, La Michoacana also carries a huge selection of paletas (Mexican popsicles). They have so many popsicle flavors that they have to keep track of the inventory on a giant spreadsheet on the wall...unfortunately, they've always been out of gooseberry on my visits. The paletas are the Michoacana brand, so they're not made in-house, but still quite tasty. Well worth a visit to mushroom country.

As a local I can testify that this is a 'must seel in the area. The maize (corn) ice cram is my fav...but I had the chocolate the other day so now I can't decide. Lucky to be local and get to enjoy it al the time!

Corn ice cream? Guava? I know how it sounds but these all work at this great little place. Bars (popsicles) and hand dipped ice cream abound. Bring the family and sit on the benches in this beautiful little town and enjoy.

Spectacular, unique ice cream. Home made Mexican flavors. Get the corn with chili pepper or Cinnamon. Try the avocado or any of the fruit flavors. Also, ask about the Popsicles. They are really good. They have a fruit with chili pepper that is addicting. There's real spice in that fruit pop. I've heard their sundaes are very good too, but have never gotten one.

well on a whim stopped by today for a late day treat with the family and went "all in" on the corn ice cream. I'm still shocked how much I liked it. Nice staff and very willing to give out samples to try. A unique experience if you are in the Kennett area.

  • Emily C.

Yummm. As others have said, this place has delicious and unusual homemade flavors I had never seen before. I played it safe with a combination of Chocolate Brownie and Strawberries and Cream. Much to my delight, they were willing to give me two flavors in the small-size cup (how could I possibly narrow it down to one?). While not as decadently creamy (as in: fatty) as my fave Franklin Fountain in Philly, both flavors tasted natural and delicious and were clearly made in house. The Strawberries and Cream was vanilla with a fresh, intense strawberry puree ripple that made my mouth water for more, although I wish the ice cream base had a stronger vanilla flavor. Next time, I'll have to be more adventurous and try some of the more unusual flavors others have recommended. I can taste the corn and peach already...

    (4)
  • Dawn W.

I tried the tasty and unique corn but went with the delicious guava. My boyfriend loved his nutella ice cream too. The prices were better than what we're used to at ice cream places in Philadelphia, and the servers were very nice. If I lived closer, I'd come all the time! Be sure to try the Mexican bakery "Las Alondras" down the street!

    (4)
  • Caitlyn D.

Total deliciousness. Their medium cup is generous and the Nutella ice cream has real ground hazelnuts in it! They also sometimes stay open past the times you see on the internet, which is a plus if you're coming in from West Chester after a late dinner. I only wish I hadn't discovered them two weeks before I move away...

Corn Ice cream? Guava and Cream? Yup, you read it right! And it is great! If you are in the area of Kennett Square, you have got to check it out!
